Mexicantown: Voices from la Comunidad
By Emmanuel Orozco Castellanos
We went out to the streets of Southwest Detroit and interviewed community members, including both longstanding and recent residents. Participants were photographed by Theon Delgado Sr.*, who has spent years documenting and capturing the beauty of every-day experiences in Southwest Detroit where he has spent most of his life. Through their own voices, which you may listen to below in English and Spanish, community members express appreciation for their community and explain what Mexicantown's urban art means to them.
*Theon Delgado Sr. is a 2018 Fellow with Facing Change: Documenting Detroit. He spent that summer capturing images along Vernor Hwy for his project, 3 Miles Thru Southwest. Theon’s focus is street and documentary photography that includes art, life, love, pride, and diversity. You may follow his work on Instagram (fortyeight209).
