“La gente. Este es el barrio mexicano, y eso me gusta.”

  • Interviewer (I): Can you tell me what your name is and how old you are?

Verónica (V): Verónica Garnica. I’m Forty...no. Fifty years old.

I: And where are you from?

    V: I’m from Arandas.

    I: I’m from San Ignacio!

    V: We’re neighbors.

I: We come from the same place. And how long have you lived in Detroit?

    V: One year.

I: One year? So you’re new. What brings you here? Why did you decide to move here?

V: Uh, because…I actually don’t know why I moved here….I moved here because of my cousins.

I: You have family here? Oh, okay. And what do you like about living here in Mexicantown?

V: Yes, the people. After all, this is the Mexican neighborhood. That’s what I like.

I: And what do you think about the city’s murals? Do you feel like your culture is represented?

V: Yes, it’s very beautiful, of course. The murals are beautiful, and you find them everywhere here in Detroit. For example, that one over there with the mariachis.

I: Did you go to the Cinco de Mayo parade?

    V: Of course.

I: And did you like it?

    V: Absolutely!

I: Was it your first time going to the parade?

    V: Yes.

I: That’s all. Thank you very much, I’m going to stop recording. Thank you and have a nice day.

    V: Likewise. See you later.

I: Is it okay if he takes a picture of you near the mural?

V: He can take a picture of them. I’m not…[talking to the girls]: alright, go over there.
